Its use should establish a clear understanding between an employee and the supervisor as to what is expected. If more severe disciplinary action should later become necessary, the record of the reprimand(s) in the personnel file would demonstrate that the employee was made aware of the consequences of further misconduct.

La réprimande écrite est un moyen pour le superviseur de signifier clairement au fonctionnaire ce qu'on attend de lui. Si une sanction disciplinaire plus sévère doit ultérieurement être imposée, la ou les réprimandes consignées au dossier du fonctionnaire prouveraient que ce dernier a été prévenu des conséquences qu'il aurait à subir en cas de faute subséquente.
